Clinton senior midfielder Jack Jacobson scored a golden goal with 12.4 seconds left in the second overtime to stun host Cooperstown in a Center State Conference non-division match Monday, Sept. 9, at Lambert Field 2.
“Both teams had good chances near the end of regulation,” Cooperstown Coach Frank Miosek said. “With 40 seconds left in overtime, Clinton had a counter attack that resulted in a melee in the six. We failed to clear and they poked it in for the winner.”
The game was scoreless at halftime and for 25 minutes of the second half as well.
Liam Kramer got the Comets* on the board first, scoring from close range with 15:11 left in regulation. Henry Schweitzer set up both Clinton goals by winning a ball in the right corner and making a cross. Neither pass led directly to a goal, but in both cases the Comets scored on a tap in after a scrum in the box.
Senior Cooper Bradley tied the game with 11:13 left, collecting a ball in the box, and then getting off a couple of shots on goal. The first attempt was blocked by a defender but the second attempt found the left corner of the goal.
Cooperstown outshot Clinton, 26-16, although both squads had six corner kicks. Sam Hepler had six saves for Clinton, while senior Cooper Coleman has nine saves for the Hawkeyes, including several nice saves in the first overtime.
Cooperstown (0-0, 1-1) hosts Herkimer for a CSC Division II match Friday, Sept. 13.
*An earlier version of this story used Clinton’s old nickname. They were renamed the Comets this year.
