Football: Hawkeyes get first win
28 second half points gives Cooperstown comeback over host New York Mills

Cooperstown 28, New York Mills 20
Senior Cameron Fritts and junior Brenin Dempsey each scored two rushing touchdowns as Cooperstown got its first win of the season, Saturday, Oct. 12, beating host New York Mills in an East Division game.
Trailing at halftime, 8-0, Cooperstown scored 15 points in the third quarter to take a 15-8 lead into the fourth. Fritts scored in the aftermath of a blocked punt by senior Owen Bryant and a recovery by senior Lucas Clements. Dempsey also scored in the third quarter to give the Hawkeyes their first lead of the season.
Fritts and Dempsey scored again in the fourth quarter. Dempsey’s score came on a 47-yard run to give the Hawkeyes a 28-14 lead.
Freshman Sawyer Bridger kicked two PATs and senior Jackson Begin also converted a two-point play.
Sophomore Caden Laymon had four second half quarterback sacks. Fritts also had a big sack, and sophomore Tommy Geertgens and freshman Parker McManus also made big defensive plays.
New York Mills (1-5, 0-5) scored late for the final tally but junior Max Koffer covered an on-side kick for the Hawkeyes to preserve the win.
Cooperstown (1-4, 1-3) hosts East Division leader Frankfort-Schuyler (5-0, 4-0) on Saturday, Oct. 19.
