NYSPHSAA Swimming and Diving Championship
Milford sophomore Emily Kane’s second trip to the New York State Public High School Athletic Associations Girls Swimming and Diving Championship was twice as sweet.
The Hawkeye standout placed 27th in the 100 breaststroke and 38th in the 200 IM at the state championship meet Nov. 22 and 23, in Webster.
Kane, who won Section III Class B/C titles in both events, had a time of 1:09.88 in the 100 breaststroke preliminaries and a 1:10 in the finals. She swam the 200 IM prelim in 2:17.27.
As a freshman, Kane placed 45th in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:21.82.
“Last year she went for one event, the 200 IM and did not get to return for the second day of competition,” Coach John Hodgson said. “The top 30 in each event get to come back on Saturday. This year she went for two events, 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. She placed in the top 30 in the breaststroke, returned on Saturday and placed 27th out of 30.
“It was a great experience, and she definitely improved since last year,” he continued. “She was a bit bummed that she added time to her events, compared to the times she set in October/November. She's still at the beginning of her swim season, so she should do well in the spring. I think it was a huge honor to make it to states and it wasn't lost on her at all.”
